It’s Manchester United meet Real Sociedad at Old Trafford in 1st round of UEFA Europa League on Wednesday 8 September.
After snapping Arsenal’s unbeaten start to the year, Manchester United will play Real Sociedad at Old Trafford on Thursday night to open Group E of the Europa League.
The Spanish visitors earned a point from a 1-1 draw with Atletico Madrid in La Liga while the Red Devils defeated their rivals from the capital 3-1 over the weekend.
Home team: Man Utd (Last 10 games in new season: 5-2-3 Scored 14 goals and conceded 13 goals)
While the £85.4 million acquisition Antony did exhibit some of the showy movement that has drawn online jeers when used against Arsenal, the slick Brazilian also showed his skill in front of goal to aid the Red Devils in extending their winning streak at the cost of Arsenal.
Before a threatening Arsenal finally got their due via Bukayo Saka, Antony curled home a lovely debut goal. However, the Gunners’ defense crumbled as Marcus Rashford came up with a second-half brace for the revitalized Red Devils.
Man United enters the first matchday of the Europa League having won four straight matches in the Premier League, with both Arsenal and Liverpool falling victim to their superiority at Old Trafford. Man United have now recovered from their appalling start to competitive proceedings under Erik ten Hag.
In each of their last three appearances in the second-tier competition, Man United has advanced as far as the semifinals; however, Villarreal’s skill on the penalty spot allowed them to defeat the Red Devils and win the title in 2021. Man United will now attempt to continue this perfect streak of making it out of the group stage in the Europa League.
The Theatre of Dreams crowd won’t be anticipating Omonia or Sheriff Tiraspol to cause their side much problems later on in Group E. Man United’s European trip last season similarly came to an abrupt end as they lost to Atletico Madrid in the last-16 of the Champions League.
Luke Shaw was healthy enough to sit on the bench during Man United’s victory over Arsenal, while Anthony Martial, Facundo Pellistri, and Brandon Williams are still sidelined. Williams did not make the Europa League roster in any case.
Rotation is expected from the hosts, possibly beginning in goal where Martin Dubravka will look to make his debut. Donny van de Beek and Aaron Wan-Bissaka will need to be evaluated as they attempt to recover from injuries in time for the game.
Due to competition from players like Harry Maguire, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Casemiro for spots in the starting lineup, Lisandro Martinez and Marcus Rashford might not be risked after their cautious withdrawals over the weekend.
Away team: Real Sociedad (Last 9 games in new season: 4-2-3 Scored 9 goals and conceded 10 goals)
Real Sociedad did not let Alvaro Morata’s early goal against Atletico Madrid dampen their spirits as they rallied to draw 1-1 with Diego Simeone’s team, continuing their trend of scoring one and no more than one goal in La Liga games this season.
Umar Sadiq, 25, scored goal after goal for Almeria in the second division last season, so replacing Newcastle United’s newcomer Alexander Isak with him paid off right away. He headed in the equalizer barely 10 minutes after coming off the bench.
Imanol Alguacil’s team has won twice so far away from home, though they were against Cadiz and Elche rather than 20-time national champions Man United, and seven out of a potential 12 points is still not a bad start to the year.
Sociedad will participate in the Europa League group stage for the third time in a row in the 2022–23 season. During the 2020–21 and 2021–22 seasons, they successfully advanced to the knockout stages, but last year, RB Leipzig eliminated them at the last–32 stage.
Prior to that 5-4 overall loss to Die Roten Bullen, Alguacil’s team lost to Man United at the same stage of the 2020–21 competition when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer guided the Red Devils to a 4-0 victory at the Allianz Stadium and a goalless draw in the return leg at Old Trafford.
Due to a stress fracture in his foot, French center back Robin Le Normand has been left off the visiting team for the match on Thursday. Diego Rico, Mikel Oyarzabal, Martin Merquelanz, and Carlos Fernandez have also been ruled out. Aritz Elustondo ought to take Le Normand’s place in the center of the defense.
Following Sadiq’s goal last time out off the bench, Alexander Sorloth and Mohamed-Ali Cho will both be concerned for their positions at the head of the attack, while David Silva is anticipated to play the number 10 position upon his return to Manchester.
History:
Manchester United 0-0 Real Sociedad 26/02/2021 1st Leg 1/16 Final Europa League
Real Sociedad 0-4 Manchester United 19/02/2021 2nd Leg 1/16 Final Europa League
Real Sociedad 0-0 Manchester United 06/11/2013 Champions League
Manchester United 1-0 Real Sociedad 24/10/2013 Champions League
Analytics:
Sociedad has struggled mightily thus far this year, and even if Ten Hag decides to rearrange the defensive pack, Alguacil’s team will still have their work cut out for them if they hope to worry the Red Devils’ backline.
The visitors are still difficult to defeat on occasion, but Man United will greatly benefit from Le Normand’s anticipated absence and should prevail in a close game to record their fifth straight victory.
