It’s Manchester United meet Liverpool at Old Trafford in 2022/23 Premier League on Monday 22 August.
Manchester United will host arch rivals Liverpool at Old Trafford on Monday night in what is perhaps the greatest game on the English football schedule.
Man United is presently last in the Premier League after losing their first two games to Brentford and Brighton & Hove Albion, while Liverpool, who finished second last season, is 12th after drawing their opening two matches against Fulham and Crystal Palace.
Home team: Man United (Last 8 games in new season: 3-2-3 Scored 15 goals and conceded 12 goals)
When he accepted the position as manager of the Red Devils in May, Erik ten Hag would not have been in denial about the scope of the work ahead of him at Old Trafford, but the reality of the issue has become even more clear to the 52-year-old over the first few months of his tenure.
Man United lost to Brighton 2-1 at home to begin their 2022–23 Premier League season on August 7 before being shocked by Brentford 4-0 last weekend. All of the goals scored by the home team came in the first half of the game.
The Red Devils are now at the bottom of the division as a result of the two losses and their already dismal goal differential. Another defeat on Monday would put even more pressure on Ten Hag, who has been tasked with helping to restore probably the biggest football club on earth.
With the additions of Tyrell Malacia, Christian Eriksen, and Lisandro Martinez, the team’s summer transfer business has been at best modest. However, a deal for Casemiro has now been reached, and the club is reportedly working on two or three additional additions before the transfer window closes, including Ajax’s Antony.
The league standings aren’t worth much at this point in the season, but a victory over Liverpool, who have just two points after two games, would put the 20-time English champions above their rivals and possibly serve as a springboard for a successful run.
Three days before a crucial match against Arsenal at Old Trafford—the Gunners have shown enormous improvement early in the season, while Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea have hinted that they will once again be in the mix when it comes to challenging for the top four this season—Man United will finish August away to Southampton before traveling to Leicester City at the start of September.
Casemiro’s arrival is a huge step in the right direction, but more signings are required before the end of the window. The Red Devils finished sixth last season, 13 points behind fourth-placed Tottenham, which is an indication of the turnaround that needs to occur for the club to return to the Champions League spots.
Last season, Liverpool humiliated Man United in both of their Premier League contests, losing 5-0 at Old Trafford and 4-0 at Anfield. Jurgen Klopp’s team has won each of their last three league matches, and the Red Devils haven’t defeated their rivals in England’s top division since March 2018.
The Cristiano Ronaldo transfer saga continues to dominate the news, so it will be interesting to watch if the Portugal international starts this game once more. The encounter might be his final one for Man United at Old Trafford, and a transfer before the end of the month is still very likely.
Suso and Munir El-Haddadi, who were injured and missed Sevilla’s opening-day match against Osasuna, are likely to stay out, and Karim Rekik and Nemanja Gudelj will play in the middle of the back four now that Diego Carlos and Jules Kounde have both left the team.
Rafa Mir was chosen over Youssef En-Nesyri at the top of the pitch last time, but Lopetegui still has options. Jesus Corona, Lucas Ocampos, Alejandro Gomez, and Erik Lamela are all pushing to play behind a lone striker.
In lieu of Marcos Acuna, left-back Alex Telles, on loan from Manchester United, will look to make his first competitive start. Joan Jordan and Ivan Rakitic are also competing for a spot in the starting lineup after Fernando and Thomas Delaney were used as reserve players against Osasuna.
Away team: Liverpool (Last 8 games in new season: 3-2-3 Scored 13 goals and conceded 12 goals)
Given the bar that Liverpool and Manchester City have set in recent years, the Reds’ back-to-back draws to open the 2018 Premier League campaign are by no means ideal, especially given that Man City has won its first two games and currently sits four points ahead of the Merseyside giants.
In order to get a point in a 2-2 draw against Fulham on opening weekend of the season, Liverpool twice had to come from behind. On Monday, they too fell behind early against Crystal Palace thanks to Wilfried Zaha until Luis Diaz equalized just before the hour.
Given that Darwin Nunez received a red card against Patrick Vieira’s team and is now ineligible to go to Old Trafford, the Reds must take extra precautions to prevent Man City from gaining an early and substantial advantage.
After this match, Klopp’s team plays at home against Bournemouth and Newcastle United back-to-back times before traveling to Goodison Park to face Everton in the Merseyside derby.
The gap between Liverpool and Man City in the Premier League last season was just one point, and they also won the FA Cup and EFL Cup doubles, defeating Chelsea in both finals.
However, the Reds’ defeat to Real Madrid in the Champions League was disappointing. The club will need to swiftly reach last season’s level if they hope to keep pace with Man City in the Premier League standings, as Pep Guardiola’s team appears to be overwhelmingly strong once more.
Liverpool would not enter panic mode even if they lost on Monday, but Man City only dropped points in nine out of their 38 Premier League games last season, and two points from their first three games would be a disappointing start for Klopp’s team given their level in recent years.
Liverpool is unbeaten in their last 21 league games, while Man United has dropped its last four Premier League games, including its final two games of the 2021–22 season. The odds lead to a Liverpool victory on Monday, but there are certain unique aspects of the game that will offer Man United optimism.
While the Red Devils are scrambling around for new signings late in the window, Liverpool’s business is seemingly complete, with Nunez, Fabio Carvalho and Calvin Ramsay arriving this summer; there has been talk of a new midfielder arriving, but the Merseyside giants are allegedly prepared to wait until next year to sign leading target Jude Bellingham from Borussia Dortmund.

Analytics:
Anthony Martial, who has yet to play this season due to a hamstring issue, will be back for Man United, but Ten Hag is expected to start the Frenchman on the bench, which means that Ronaldo, despite the rumors over his future, may once again be the attacking leader.
Raphael Varane is reported to pose a serious threat to Harry Maguire’s starting spot, and Malacia, who stood out against Brentford in the second half, may also displace Luke Shaw.
Even if their new-look defense is still a little wobbly, Lopetegui’s team should be too good for the newly promoted team. They will be desperate to avenge their opening-day loss.
With Fred, Bruno Fernandes, and Eriksen perhaps returning to the midfield three, Ten Hag is anticipated to resist the urge to make drastic changes, leaving Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford to partner Ronaldo up forward.
The 20-time English champions continue to be without Brandon Williams, Facundo Pellistri, and Victor Lindelof, and Mason Greenwood is currently serving a suspension.
As for Liverpool, Roberto Firmino is anticipated to replace Nunez in Liverpool’s starting lineup because Klopp stated during his press conference that the Brazilian is available for selection. Nunez is suspended for this match.
Joel Matip, Thiago Alcantara, Ibrahima Konate, Curtis Jones, Diogo Jota, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Ramsay, and Caoimhin Kelleher are all currently injured. Naby Keita will also be in the team after recovering from illness.
Joe Gomez is anticipated to make his debut for Klopp on Monday, replacing James Milner in midfield with club captain Jordan Henderson.
For the Reds, Diaz and Mohamed Salah will once again play in the wide positions, and Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk, and Andrew Robertson will make up the same defensive trio.
I believe the predictions are gonna be miserable, and that’s why we offer different predictions, but don’t worry, we just offer 1 prediction on 1 aspect, like over 2.5 OR under 2.5, we don’t offer under 2.5 AND over 2.5, no.
