It’s PSG meet Juventus at Parc des Princes in 1st round of UEFA Champions League on Tuesday 6 September.
Paris Saint-Germain take on Juventus in the Champions League on Tuesday.
Surprisingly, these two European giants have not faced each other in a competitive match since Juventus ran out 9-2 aggregate winners in the 1996 UEFA Super Cup.
Home team: PSG (Last 10 games in new season: 9-1-0 Scored 39 goals and conceded 7 goals)
Naturally, a lot has happened since then, with PSG’s trajectory soaring dramatically upwards since being taken over by Qatar Sports Investments in 2011, helping them along the way to acquire superstars like Kylian Mbappe, Neymar, and Lionel Messi.
The Parisians have yet to win the Champions League, with their 1-0 loss to Bayern Munich in the final in 2020 marking the closest they have got to winning Europe’s premier competition.
With only 30 minutes left at the Bernabeu Stadium, they had a 2-0 aggregate lead over Real Madrid, who ultimately eliminated them at the last-16 stage last year, but Karim Benzema’s quick-fire hat-trick turned the tie around, causing PSG to once again falter at the highest level.
This summer, Christophe Galtier took over as Mauricio Pochettino’s replacement as manager. The former Lille manager appears to have already improved PSG’s balance by switching to a 3-5-2 configuration in the early stages of his term. They have moved to the top of Ligue 1 ahead of Marseille on goal differential after five victories and one draw, including a convincing 3-0 victory away to Nantes at the weekend.
Galtier will be closely watched for his performance and advancement in the Champions League, much like any other PSG manager in recent memory. It shouldn’t be difficult for them to go to the knockout rounds for an 11th consecutive season because Maccabi Haifa, Benfica, and their upcoming opponents Juventus were also drawn in Group H with them. However, the true struggle will come after that.
Only Julian Draxler and Timothee Pembele are out due to knee problems, leaving PSG with a nearly fully healthy squad to pick from.
Allegri may decide to start Sergio Ramos, Neymar, Nuno Mendes, and Renato Sanches again; Danilo Pereira, Pablo Sarabia, Juan Bernat, and Vitinha are expected to make room for them. The four players all came off the bench during the weekend’s victory at Nantes.
Keylor Navas has been preferred in goal so far this season over Gianluigi Donnarumma, but the Italian stopper may be denied the chance to play his former team in order to give Navas crucial playing time as the team’s cup goalie.
Away team: Juventus (Last 9 games in new season: 3-4-2 Scored 11 goals and conceded 12 goals)
Juventus, meanwhile, has only ever lost seven finals and has only ever won the European Cup twice, earning them the nickname “permanent bridesmaids.”
The Turin-based team hasn’t advanced past the quarterfinals of the Champions League since falling to Lyon, Benfica, and Villarreal in each of the previous three seasons after defeating Spanish powerhouses Barcelona and Real Madrid in the championships in 2015 and 2017, respectively.
Since the two Milan teams have improved beyond them and Juventus hasn’t won the Serie A since 2020, expectations are lower than they once were, but Massimiliano Allegri will hope to at least go one step farther this time.
After five games, they are still unbeaten in Serie A. Three draws, however, put them a few points behind AC Milan and Napoli at the top of the table, but with only two goals allowed in those matches, they have a strong foundation to build upon.
If they want to stop PSG’s star-studded attacking players from running amok at Parc des Princes on Tuesday, their defense will unquestionably need to be at its best.
Juventus, however, may be without Paul Pogba, Adrien Rabiot, Wojciech Szczesny, Marley Ake, Kaio Jorge, and Federico Chiesa due to a number of injury concerns.
As Szczesny recovers from an ankle ailment, Mattia Perin will continue to fill in for the former Arsenal goalkeeper. Leonardo Bonucci may also make a comeback to the lineup to add experience at center back, with Danilo moving to the right side.
Angel di Maria could miss Tuesday’s game against his former team after being replaced at halftime of his team’s 1-1 draw away to Fiorentina over the weekend. Dusan Vlahovic is expected to replace Arkadiusz Milik up front despite the Pole having opened the score on Saturday, and Juan Cuadrado would likely play higher up the pitch to provide more defensive stability on that side.
History:
Paris Saint-Germain 2-3 Juventus 27/07/2017 International Champions Cup
Analytics:
PSG should be too good for Juventus, who are without several important players due to injury.
The Parisians are potential of making significant progress in the Champions League this year, but the visitors may struggle to get past the last-16 stage once more.
