Manchester United 3-1 Arsenal: Marcus Rashford scores twice after Antony debut goal ends Gunners’ perfect start
Manchester United defeated Arsenal 3-1 at Old Trafford thanks to two goals from Marcus Rashford in the second half. Antony scored on his debut.
The Brazilian made a fantastic start to life at United by scoring a first-half goal with a cool first-time finish after arriving for £86 million on Deadline Day from Ajax (35).
After VAR overturned Gabriel Martinelli’s brilliant finish in the 12th minute due to Martin Odegaard’s foul on Christian Eriksen in the build-up to the goal, Antony’s goal came after Arsenal had been denied an early lead.
Bukayo Saka’s goal early in the second half earned Mikel Arteta’s team a point (60).
Six minutes later, however, Rashford scored from Bruno Fernandes’ through-ball to give United the advantage once more.
Erik ten Hag’s team then secured a fourth straight victory, moving them up to fifth place, with a breakaway goal by Rashford in the 75th minute.
As the Gunners’ unbeaten start comes to an end, United are now three points behind league leaders Arsenal, who are now only one point ahead of Manchester City and Tottenham.
Kai Havertz of Chelsea celebrates after scoring his team’s second goal.
Chelsea 2-1 West Ham: Kai Havertz and Ben Chilwell inspire comeback win off the bench
After Maxwel Cornet’s controversially chalked-off late equalizer gave Chelsea a 2-1 victory at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, David Moyes declared that he “lost faith in VAR.”
Kai Havertz scored the game-winning goal in overtime (88), and substitute Cornet thought he had atoned for his mistakes until VAR Jarred Gillett instructed referee Andy Madley to review Jarrod Bowen’s tiny touch of Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy on his monitor.
Accusing Mendy of fabricating an injury, West Ham manager David Moyes called the verdict “rotten” and “stupid,” while Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel added, “There is a reason it went in our favor.”
After Michail Antonio gave West Ham the lead from close range (62), Ben Chilwell equalized (76), then helped another replacement, Havertz, score the game-winning goal.
After six games without a victory, West Ham are currently in 17th place, barely above the relegation zone. Tuchel’s team temporarily climbs up to fifth after returning to winning ways.
At Villa Park, Erling Haaland scored his tenth goal in six games to give Man City the lead.
Aston Villa 1-1 Manchester City: Leon Bailey equalises for home side after Erling Haaland’s 10th goal in six games
Erling Haaland’s 10th goal in six games prevented Aston Villa from earning a 1-1 home draw, denying Manchester City the chance to retake the top spot in the Premier League.
With a goal in the second half at Villa Park (50), Haaland added to his back-to-back hat-tricks against Crystal Palace and Nottingham Forest. He did this to move four goals clear in the Premier League scoring standings.
Haaland and De Bruyne both missed opportunities to score a second goal. The Norwegian striker was twice denied by Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, and the Belgian hit the crossbar with a free kick.
However, in the 74th minute, Bailey scored the equalizer for the home team following a low cross from Jacob Ramsey.
Philippe, a replacement for Villa Even though replays afterwards proved Coutinho was onside, he was penalized for offside before his shot from outside the box deflected in off the underside of the bar. Coutinho thought he had given them a startling advantage.
Rodri missed a late opportunity for City to score, and Martinez stopped Phil Foden’s close-range attempt, but Villa hung on to avoid suffering a fourth straight league loss and earn manager Steven Gerrard a much-needed point.
While Manchester United and Arsenal play at Old Trafford on Sunday, live on Sky Sports, Pep Guardiola’s team is trailing by one point.
Liverpool’s Diaz hits the post in the first half.
Everton 0-0 Liverpool: Honours even in frantic Merseyside derby as VAR denies Conor Coady winner
Conor Coady’s heroic effort to score the winning goal in a tense 0-0 draw against Everton was stopped by VAR at the start of the new Premier League season, costing Liverpool additional points.
Liverpool was far from their best in the first half and were fortunate not to increase this figure when Tom Davies hit the post after giving up the first goal in eight of their previous nine games.
Just before halftime, Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz both hit the woodwork, with Nunez’s looping shot being stopped by Jordan Pickford, who was playing in the same area of the field.
Before Everton thought they had taken the lead on 69 minutes when Coady tapped home Neal Maupay’s cross-shot, VAR ruled out the goal after a protracted delay. Virgil van Dijk was given a booking for a rough challenge on Amadou Onana and, in Frank Lampard’s opinion, was fortunate to escape further punishment.
The outstanding Pickford diverted Mohamed Salah’s injury-time shot into the post, but Jurgen Klopp was forced to settle for a draw, moving Liverpool up to sixth position for the rest of Saturday’s games.
Harry Kane of Tottenham celebrates with teammates after scoring the second goal for his club.
Tottenham 2-1 Fulham: Harry Kane and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg on target but Spurs made to sweat for victory
Tottenham defeated Fulham 2-1 in a tense conclusion to maintain their perfect record in the Premier League.
Following Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s first-half goal (40), Harry Kane’s close-range goal from Ryan Sessegnon’s cross (75), appeared to have given the dominant hosts a comfortable lead.
Aleksandar Mitrovic, a striker for Fulham, however, created a tense finale by controlling a long pass from Kenny Tete and curling a beautiful finish past Hugo Lloris (83) for his sixth goal of the year.
The Serb had hardly made an impact up until that point, but when his deflected shot in the last minute of normal time forced an amazing save from Lloris, Spurs nearly suffered for wasting a string of previous opportunities.
Richarlison’s close-range goal seconds later appeared to have given Spurs the victory, but VAR determined that he was offside during the play, making the hosts work a little harder for the victory that brought them even with second-place Manchester City in the standings.
At the Amex, Leicester supporters waved a sign that said, “Rodgers out.”
