During the 1982 FIFA World Cup Spain final, Beppe Bergomi, Gabriele Oriali, and Alessandro Altobelli of Italy faced Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, Paul Breitner, and Wolfgang Dremmler of West Germany, and this is when the tournament’s most remarkable streak may have started. Since then, Inter Milan and Bayern Munich have contributed at least one player to every decision.
However, they aren’t always on the same side, as Mexico ’86 demonstrated when West Germany came back to play Argentina. They had Lothar Matthaus, Dieter Hoeness, and Norbert Eder from Bayern, as well as Rummenigge from Inter, who had switched from Bavaria to Milan two years before. Although they lost to a Diego Maradona-inspired Argentina, their winning streak was maintained in the Italia ’90 rematch.
When Matthaus won the trophy that time, Inter was represented by Klaus Augenthaler, Jurgen Kohler, and Stefan Reuter, while Bayern was represented by Jurgen Klinsmann, Andrea Brehme, and Andrea Brehme.
It was Die Mannschaft‘s final opportunity to win a World Cup in the 20th century before Germany reunified. However, Italy made a comeback for the USA ’94 championship match to face Brazil’s might with Inter’s Nicola Berti, while Brazil had right-back Jorginho from the German powerhouses.
Brazil prevailed once more after Roberto Baggio’s infamous mistake in the first World Cup final to be decided on penalties following a tight match in the Pasadena heat.
The Seleção returned in 1998, competing against France on the Les Bleus‘ home field in the first final of the run without West Germany or Italy. Bixente Lizarazu of Bayern and Youri Djorkaeff of Inter also began for France, but attention was focused on Ronaldo’s teammate as the world watched the match, which France won easily.
He arrived to the championship match against Germany as the undisputed leader in the adidas Golden Shoe race, preparing to face Bayern’s Oliver Kahn, Carsten Jancker, Thomas Linke, and Jens Jeremies. However, Korea/Japan 2002 would be his tournament. Nevertheless, O Fenômeno‘s late brace secured a sixth World Cup for Brazil, and the foursome was unable to stop him.
The trophy then traveled to Germany, the first time since 1990 that it had gone to the country of one of the contending teams. After Marco Materazzi, the lone player from Inter, headed Italy to a point in the 19th minute, Zinedine Zidane opened the scoring.
Similar to 1994, Italy advanced to a World Cup Final that was decided on penalties after opportunities, extra time, and maybe the most iconic World Cup Final moment. Willy Sagnol of Bayern scored France’s penalty kick, but the Azzurri won thanks to David Trezeguet’s earlier error.
For the first time since Italia ’90, both players from each club scored in the South Africa 2010 final as Mark Van Bommel and Arjen Robben of Bayern joined Inter’s star midfielder Wesley Sneijder. A player from neither club would win the trophy for the first time since 1986 when Spain narrowly defeated them with a goal in the 116th minute from Andres Iniesta.
Brazil 2014 reignited an old rivalry as Germany and Argentina battled once more to make the match the most watched World Cup final and the one that came the closest to breaking the winning streak, unlike the first tournament held in Africa, which featured two nations that had not yet won the competition.
Seven Bayern players, including Phillip Lahm, Toni Kroos, and Thomas Muller, won the match, upholding the Germans’ end of the contract. However, none of Argentina’s three Inter players made the starting lineup, and the streak was only stopped when Rodrigo Palacio came off the bench with little over 10 minutes left, followed by Mario Gotze, who did the same to score the game-winning goal in extra time.
At the Maracana, Inter’s flag bearers may have been supporting players, but at Russia 2018, the roles were almost completely flipped. Luka Modric, a cerebral genius, and Inter’s incredibly brilliant Marcelo Brozovic and Ivan Perisic led Croatia against all odds to their first-ever final, where they faced France.
The duo kicked off the contest, with the latter leveling the score before Antoine Griezmann, Paul Pogba, and Kylian Mbappe secured a win for France and opened the door for Bayern midfielder Corentin Tolisso to enter the field in the 73rd minute on that soggy day in Moscow.
However, is it possible for the streak to last into an impossibly 11th tournament? The absence of Italy is an issue for Inter, but Brozovic, Belgium’s Romelu Lukaku, the Netherlands’ Denzel Dumfries and Stefan de Vrij, and Argentina’s Lautaro Martinez and Joaquin Correa will all be optimistic about their chances.
In addition to Josip Stanisic of Croatia, Matthijs de Ligt of Holland, Lucas Hernandez, Kingsley Coman, and Benjamin Pavard of France, Bayern, as usual, has a strong German core and will have players like Manuel Neuer and Jamal Musiala attempting to replicate the glory of Brazil.
If Inter and Bayern continue to rule the roost or if this extraordinary streak ultimately comes to an end, only time will tell.
