According to FIFA, Chile’s appeal to have Ecuador excluded from the 2022 World Cup for using an ineligible player during qualification has been unsuccessful.
FIFA examined the accusation that Byron Castillo of Ecuador lied about his nationality and age, and the issue has since been resolved.
Why was Byron Castillo Condemned by Chile?
Given that Castillo was truly Colombian and that Ecuador had faked his nationalization, Chile’s suit against Castillo focused on the use of a false birth certificate, a false age statement, and a phony nationality.
Even before the FIFA complaint, the situation had become so serious in Ecuador that Argentine coach Gustavo Alfaro chose not to employ Castillo for a significant portion of the qualifying rounds while he waited to confirm that his paperwork was in order with the appropriate authorities. In the end, the player participated in 8 of La Tri’s 18 games.
Chile May Have Been Eligible for Qatar 2022.
If FIFA had been correct, Ecuador would have been eliminated while Chile would have qualified for the World Cup as the fourth-place CONMEBOL team.
With 26 points, Ecuador placed fourth overall in the South American qualifications, trailing only Brazil (45), Argentina (39), and Uruguay (28). As a result, it received one of the direct tickets to Qatar 2022, sending Peru into the playoffs.
The Chilean national team, which came in seventh place behind Colombia, had hoped to move up to the World Cup qualification zone if they were awarded the six points from the two games that Castillo played against them.
Chile may now file an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), which will provide a decision in about a month.
