In their penultimate matchup before the 2022 World Cup, Lionel Messi and Angel Di Maria shone as Argentina defeated the United Arab Emirates 5-0 with ease.

With a convincing victory in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday, Lionel Scaloni’s team had no trouble extending their unbeaten streak to 36 games going into the competition.

Argentina quickly built a four-goal advantage at the half thanks to Di Maria’s two goals and one assist for Messi, who had earlier sent Julian Alvarez in for the game’s first goal.

The only goal of the second half was scored by substitute Joaquin Correa as the defending South American champions made a grand exit for Qatar.

With 17 minutes gone, Argentina made their early dominance count when Messi squared for Alvarez to squeak past Khalid Eisa after being sent clean through on goal.

After scoring his first goal with a precise volley that deflected off the far post, Di Maria displayed excellent footwork to evade his defender, go around the goalkeeper, and add a second.

Before halftime, Messi scored past Eisa after being set up by Di Maria, putting the UAE, who finished behind Iran and South Korea in qualifying to miss out on a spot in Qatar, farther behind.

Argentina maintained its lead after the break despite making four substitutions, including the replacement of Di Maria, and Correa scored a fifth goal on the hour while being under siege.

With a late attempt that was cleared off the line, Caio Canedo came the closest to giving the UAE a goal, but La Albiceleste held on to record their fifth straight shutout.
