The World Cup is the trophy that football fans dream about more than any other
The current trophy was first awarded in 1974
This trophy replaced the Jules Rimet Trophy
Who among us did not once as a child dream of lifting this cup themselves? Not every player has the chance to play in the FIFA World Cup finals, and even fewer get to lift the trophy. Winning this trophy guarantees you a place in football history and a hero’s legacy for the rest of your life.
Numerous footballing greats, like Diego Armando Maradona, Zinedine Zidane, Ronaldo, and Bastian Schweinsteiger, have had the honor of hoisting this trophy into the heavens and, in doing so, have entered the annals of history for all time.
1974
Brazil won the third World Cup in their history in Mexico in 1970, bringing home the Jules Rimet Trophy for good measure. The cup, which was originally created for the international competition’s first match in 1930, was finally given to Brazil after they won it three times.
Following the Seleção‘s victory in 1970, FIFA established a competition to select a new trophy to be used in 1974, when West Germany will host the World Cup.

Fifty-three designs were submitted to the competition from which FIFA selected the creation of Italian sculptor Silvio Gazzaniga. The trophy – still awarded to World Cup winners today – represents the joy of victory with two stylised players holding up the world.
“The world is a sphere so looks very similar to a football”, said the designer Gazzaniga.
36,8 x 13
The trophy is 6.175kg in weight and 36.8cm high and is made of solid 18 carat gold. Two semiprecious green malachite rings that are 13 cm in diameter and have undergone multiple restorations as well as the installation of a fresh layer of gold plating make up the base. FIFA made the decision to stop giving the victorious team the original trophy after the most recent repair in 2005.
Before returning the trophy to FIFA for the following World Cup, holders of the cup were permitted to place it on display in their federation’s trophy cabinet. The original cup has only been presented to the squad since 2006 during the formal award ceremony before being collected by FIFA staff. The original is then duplicated and presented to the winning nation.
12
The base of the trophy is inscribed with the names of the 12 teams that have won the FIFA World Cup since 1974. In Qatar, it will be given out for the thirteenth time overall.
3
The nation whose team has won this title the most times is Germany. Three times—in 1974, the first time it was given on home soil, once at Italia 90, and most recently in 2014 in Brazil—the Germans have won the World Cup created by Gazzaniga.
This World Cup is not officially awarded to the three-time champions, unlike the Jules Rimet Trophy, because if it were, Germany would already be entitled to keep it.
8-4
Since 1974, eight European teams as opposed to four South American teams have taken home the championship.
The teams that have won the FIFA World Cup Trophy are:
3 wins – Germany (1974, 1990 and 2014)
2 wins – Argentina (1978 and 1986); Italy (1982 and 2006); Brazil (1994 and 2002); France (1998 and 2018)
1 win – Spain (2010)
