When is the World Cup?

With 64 games jammed in between November 20 and December 18, there will be a winter World Cup.

What is the World Cup?

Since the first tournament in Uruguay in 1930, it has occurred every four years (except from a 12-year break either side of World War Two). It is the highest competition in international football.

Jules Rimet, a former president of FIFA, came up with the idea because he wanted to host a different competition that would build on the success of the Olympic football competitions.

What Kind Of Competition Is It?

Four teams compete in each of the eight sectors during the first round of the tournament, which hasn’t altered since France 1998.

In each group, the top two teams advance to the knockout stage, which consists of the round of 16, the quarterfinals, the semifinals, and the championship game.

The third-fourth place playoff game, which takes place the day before the final on December 16, will pit each of the losing finalists against one another.

Where Are The Games Going To Be Held?

Eight locations have been confirmed, with capacities ranging from 40,000 to 80,000 at the Lusail Iconic Stadium, which will serve as the site of the final and one of the semifinals.

The Qatar Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy stated in April 2017 that it anticipated there would only be eight venues built, compared to the initial proposal of 12 venues.

Seven of the eight sites will be in or nearby Doha, the capital.

The second-largest venue, Al Bayt Stadium in Al Khor, which will host the opening match of the competition between Qatar and an unidentified Group A opponent, has a capacity of 60,000 and will be the sole exception.

How Many Teams Contest The World Cup Finals?

13 teams competed in Uruguay’s first competition; however, after that, the number of teams expanded to 16 in 1954, 24 in 1982, and finally 32 in 1998.

With the decision to expand the 2026 edition (which will be held throughout the USA, Mexico, and Canada) to 48 teams, further growth is soon to come.

What Are The Allocations Of The Qualifying Spots Among The Various Confederations?

Since Germany 2006, the distribution of berths among various federations has been constant.

There will therefore be 13 teams from Uefa (Europe), five from CAF (Africa), four to five from AFC (Asia), four to five from CONMEBOL (South America), three to four from CONCACAF (North America, Central America, and the Caribbean), and zero to one from the OFC in addition to the host nation Qatar (Oceania).

One team from each of the four regions—AFC, CONCACAF, CONMEBOL, and OFC—will compete in the Inter-Confederation playoffs in June 2022, with two of the four teams moving on to the finals.

Who Has Secured a Spot In The 2022 Competition?

Only the host nation, Qatar, and two other countries, Germany and Denmark, have committed to attending the championship matches.

Denmark secured first place in Group F after winning all eight of its games, while Germany qualified as group champions of Uefa qualification Group J after winning seven of their initial eight games.

What Time Will The Drawing Occur?

Before qualifying is completely through, the finals draw is slated on April 1 in Doha. The remaining two will be disclosed when the Inter-Confederation playoffs are over in June. At this point, 30 of the 32 competitors will be known.
